Today was our first real day in Cambine. After traveling for three days it was nice to settle into a routine! This morning, the German missionaries who reside here gave us a tour of the compound, which included a 100-year-old church, a carpentry shop, a sewing center, an agriculatural area, and the compound's river, where most locals bathe, fill their water jugs, do laundry, etc. In the afternoon, we were able to go to the orphanage and introduce ourselves to the kids, which was by far my favorite part of the day. At first, the kids seemed to be intimidated by our presence, but within no time they had warmed up to all of us. The girls on our team ended up playing with the younger kids, who were all very intrigued by our sunglasses, watches, and hair, while the boys ended up playing soccer with some of the older kids from the orphanage. We are all excited to return to the orphanage tomorrow! Finally, some members of the Methodist Church of Cambine came to visit us before dinner. They paraded into our guest house singing and dancing, and then introduced themselves and gave us Kapalanas, or traditional African skirts. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving for the locals, so we will be attending their Thanksgiving church service in the morning, which can run anywhere between 3-5 hours. In preparation for the service, we're going to bed, so that's all for now!
